The Deity of Christ

Psalms 110:1

Psalm 110:1 ESV “¶ The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.””

Philippians 2:1–11 ESV “2:1 ¶ So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,

2:2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.

2:3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

2:4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

2:5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,

2:6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

2:7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

2:8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

2:9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,

2:10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

2:11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

As we continue our study in the Apostle’s Creed – the message will rely heavy on the Word of God so we can have a solid basis for the foundation we are building for what we believe.

Apostle Creed

            “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and was buried. The third day He rose again from the dead;

He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.”

Was Christ really God?  Or, is Christ lesser than God the Father?  Some believe that Christ was a lesser God than the Father.

Read the article.

Article 2—Of the Word, or Son of God, Who Was Made Very Man

The Son, who is the Word of the Father, the very and eternal God, of one substance with the Father, took man’s nature in the womb of the blessed Virgin; so that two whole and perfect natures, that is to say, the Godhead and Manhood, were joined together in one person, never to be divided; whereof is one Christ, very God and very Man, who truly suffered, was crucified, dead, and buried, to reconcile his Father to us, and to be a sacrifice, not only for original guilt, but also for actual sins of men.

Pre-existence of Christ

Christ was in the beginning with the Father

John 1:1–3 ESV “1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

1:2 He was in the beginning with God.

1:3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

Christ in the Old Testament

Genesis 3:8 ESV “¶ And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.”

Jeremiah 31:31–32 ESV “31:31 ¶ “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah,

31:32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord.”

Christ is this New Covenant.

Isaiah 9:6–7 ESV “9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

9:7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.”

Prophesied from old

Micah 5:2 ESV “ But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.”

The Name of Christ

I AM

God in Old Testament

Exodus 3:14 ESV “God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’””

Christ in the New Testament

John 8:58 ESV “Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.””.

The Power to Forgive Sins

Only God has the power to forgive sins

Mark 2:1–12 ESV “2:1 ¶ And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home.

2:2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them.

2:3 And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.

2:4 And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay.

2:5 And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

2:6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts,

2:7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

2:8 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts?

2:9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’?

2:10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—

2:11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.”

2:12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!””

Only God can forgive sins – verse 7.

Christ forgave the sins of the man – shows that He is God and has the power to forgive men of their sins – verse 5.

Claim of Equality with the Father

Jesus claimed to be equal with the Father which makes Him as the Father.

John 10:24–30 ESV “10:24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

10:25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me,

10:26 but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep.

10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

10:28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

10:29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.

10:30 I and the Father are one.””

The Creative Power of Christ

First Miracle – Turned the water into Wine

Able to transform material.

Colossians 1:14–17 ESV “1:14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

1:15 ¶ He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

1:16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.

1:17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

John 1:1–5 ESV “1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

1:2 He was in the beginning with God.

1:3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

1:4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

1:5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Power over the elements

Calmed the sea in the storm in Mark 4.

Walked on the water in John.

Rebuked the wind and it ceased in Luke 8: 24

Luke 8:24 ESV “And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm.” .

Power over the physical body

Healed the blind

Mark 10:52 ESV “And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.”

Raised the dead

Luke 7:1 ESV “¶ After he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.”5

Healed the lepers

Matthew 8:3 ESV “And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.”

Cured all kinds of diseases and sickness

Matthew 4:23 ESV “¶ And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.”

Restored the withered hand

Matthew 12:13 ESV “Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And the man stretched it out, and it was restored, healthy like the other.”

Healed the dumb and deaf

Matthew 15:30 ESV “And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them,”

The God-like Power of Christ

Omnipresence of Christ

Matthew 18:20 ESV “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.””

Christ tells us that when we are gathered in His name, He will be in our presences.

Omniscience of Christ

Knew the thoughts of men

Matthew 12:25 ESV “Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand.”

Knew things

Mark 11:2 ESV “and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it.”

John 21:17 ESV “He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.”

Omnipotence of Christ

Matthew 28:18 ESV “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

Luke 9:1 ESV “¶ And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases,”

Judgeship of Christ

Matthew 7:21–23 ESV “7:21 ¶ “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

7:22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’

7:23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’”

Ten Proofs of His Deity

Eternal

Micah 5:2 ESV “ But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.”

Unchangeable

Hebrews 13:8 ESV “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Omnipotent – all powerful

Omniscience – all knowing

Omnipresent – all present

Holy

Mark 1:24 ESV ““What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.””

Just

John 2:14–17 ESV “2:14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there.

2:15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.

2:16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.”

2:17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.””

Loving

John 15:13 ESV “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

Merciful

Titus 3:5 ESV “he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,”

1 Peter 1:18–21 ESV “1:18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold,

1:19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

1:20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you

1:21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.”

Faithful

2 Timothy 2:13 ESV “if we are faithless, he remains faithful— ¶ for he cannot deny himself.”

What do I believe?  I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.  He is equal with the Father.  He is God who became man so He might take away our sins and bring us eternal life.
